I am 39 yrs old and had pain in my neck and shoulder. Thinking that it was just stress I let it go. This past Friday I woke up in such horrible pain that that I was throwing up. My boyfriend was at work by this time and thankfully my roommate was still home. She saw the pain that I was in called out of work and took me to the ER. We found out that I have Cervical Radiculopathy along with a bone spur in my neck pushing on my spinal canal. I know that I'm looking at surgery at this point already. I have lost a about half of my strength in my right hand due to this. I can't even lift a glass of water.
Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to try to avoid the surgery? After reading up on it I'm very scared at the thought of it. Exercise? Anything..

Keep some patience and bear the pain for some time while you start your exercises. I am 41 and I too had the same problem. MRIsvan had revealed cervical disc prolapse at c5-c6 with thecal indentation and a disc bulge at C6-c7. I had severe pain on my upper back and shoulders (right side) and numbness in both my arms; I could barely sleep. I persisted with isometric neck exercises my neurosurgeon told me for a month which resulted in about 40% improvement. Then I saw this site and got hold of the book Rebuild your Neck; the book had some additional exercises from what my doctor had prescribed. I started with these new exercises as well since 2 weeks now and I have had about another 40% improvement. At this stage I do not feel any pain in performing my routine activities.
It is important to gather your strength, have a bit of patience and you should be able to avoid surgery. My doc told me that some people take up to 6 months to recover using this conservative treatment for cervical disc related problem.
