compression fracture at the L1 level

Post by Liz » Tue Sep 04, 2007 12:51 pm

I hurt my back on a slope in Switzerland.( went into ice that I thought was snow). I received a compression fracture of the L1 level. When I returned to the states my doctor gave me pain pills and told me to rest. I had been very active, going to curves three times a week, before the accident. It has now been a month and I am walking for ten minutes. What else should I do to regain my strength. I am 65 years old, but I think I'm 35.

Hi Liz

Broken bone takes at least 6 weeks to heal, doesn't it? My daughter (then age 4) had a cast to immobilize her lower arm for 6 weeks, following a compression fracture of that arm's wrist. After 6 weeks, Xrays revealed the bone had healed sufficiently to be used again.

While I admire your initiative and resolve to keep movin', it would seem your doctor is right on, to recommend limiting stress to a minimum on your broken vertebra by resting ... so the bone can heal. I assume your doctor will be able to give you the go-ahead to use your back again .... so you can gradually build up strength in atrophied muscles ... then keep up with the youngsters.
