Elliptical Trainer

I just bought a copy of Rebuild Your Back, which I am looking forward to reading.

I've had mild (and occasionally bad) lower back and leg pains (sciatica) for years. I'm a programmer and spend far too much time sitting at a terminal. Going for walks helps, but one thing I found that seems to be vastly more effective is spending time on an elliptical trainer. I wonder what it is about that motion that seems to be so beneficial to my back? It is literally true that five minutes a day on an elliptical trainer does more good than taking a 20 minute walk every day.

Hi Chris,

An elliptical trainer is is a type of running machine much like an exercise bike or treadmill.


Thanks for sharing the tip. What brand / model of elliptical trainer do you have? Are you happy with it? Is there one you would recommend over the others?

Not looking for an advertisement, but any insight into choosing one for home use would be helpful.

Right, an elliptical trainer is a little like a stationary bicycle, except you are standing on the peddles, not sitting.

I bought a NordicTrack CXT 910.

Several years ago I really messed up my back carrying a heavy section of a dining table. The next day I could hardly get out of bed. I worked at my computer standing up for several months. I went for walks and tried to do a few things for my back, but I can't say that I really did "proper" back exercises. I was afraid for a while I had some kind of disc injury.

I already owned the elliptical trainer, and someone told me it was good for the back, so I used it a little. I was surprised that my back pain cleared up very rapidly, about a week, after exercising on it.

Now of course, what I SHOULD be doing is using the trainer regularly, and also doing some good back exercises like in the "rebuilder" book. Just lately, I've had some mild sciatica, and the Standing Back Bend are very comforting.

Like a lot of people my age with back troubles, it is all about lack of consistent exercise and about 25 pounds of extra weight. I tend to neglect things until I notice some back pain, and then I do some exercises that clear it up. I wonder if I am the only one here who does that? :-)
