Swimming is it a good exercise? What stroke?

I am in the early stages of applying the techniques described in the book after herniating a lower back disc two months ago. Is swimming a good exercise to help the repair process of my lower back disc and if yes what stroke would be ideal? Mixture? All help suggestions much appreciated.

Walking in the water is a great resistance workout that is good for your core muscles as well as your legs. The water provides enough resistance that makes walking a challenging activity. In doing this, muscles of your abdomen and back must function effectively to maintain an upright posture while walking.

I agree that swimming is the best exercise.

I completely agree with above discussion swimming is one of the best exercise for those who have lower back pain.It helps to remove the pain and strengthen the muscles.
