Writer’s Block 1:2

Dr. Clark Bartram gives us a humorous rundown of what I assume was a typical day for him as a hospital pediatrician in A Day in the Life. Gotta love the high maintenance grandmothers.

Also while you’re there check out this classic post: Interview with Kelvin Trusseau. Priceless!

Just discovered a new-to-me blog called The Second Sight. It is run by Eor and even though I recognize the name from having seen it around the blogosphere, for some reason I’ve never read this blog before. Which is too bad because he (or she) is a stitch. Here is just an excerpt from one post entitled Eor Attends Rehap: (Emphasis mine.)

Sadly, today many alternative medicine (an aside: medicine is “the science of preventing, diagnosing, alleviating or curing disease”*, therefore the “alternative” to medicine is not doing any of these things) still adhere to “what seems to make sense” and have made little or no progression since the first days of medical treatment (indeed, the older the therapy the greater the cachet it has).

Orac’s Friday Dose of Woo is on hydration this time. Here’s a little clip:

Basically, the major pains of the body, such as, heartburn, rheumatoid joint pain, back pain, colitis pain, migraine headaches, fibromyalgic pain, even angina pain are signs of dehydration in the human body.

Or are they? Read Orac’s article for his take on the Watercure Woo.

Go to Dr. Rob’s Musing of a Distractible Mind and read the story of Alice. Alice with her pink cap. Alice with her smile. Alice who will inherit the Earth.

Finally…

Change of Shift is up at Nursing Jobs.org and once again there is plenty to read and enjoy.

Grand Rounds is up at Aetiology and includes some very interesting posts for medblog enthusiasts.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Unintelligent Design “interview” of fraud-meister Trusseau. My mom and sister sent me a copy of his book on “secrets the evil docs and bureaucrats conspires to keep from you” and I warned them they were being hood-winked and taken for fools, and gave them website addresses to show them the seamy underbelly of Meister Secret-Revealer. Of course, I’m the crazy one … but the big book they sent me makes a great door-stop. Randolph

I have an arthritic spine as well as 2 buldging discs (not next to each other). The discs began to bulge after a chair dropped straight down with me in it. (hydraulic adjustable chair). The injury progressed to the point I was unable to move very well without screaming pain in my back and legs. i am currently doing P.T. 3 times a week where my back muscles are being stimulated. I was given exercises to do that seemed to exacerbate the pain. I have been off work for over 3 weeks and would like to get back to work before I lose my job. I have not seen an orthopedist yet. Appointment is in another week. I know pain as I have suffered with trigeminal neuralgia for 10 years but had decompression surgery for that 1 1/2 years ago. I have teflon wrapped around the nerve, now. This is not like nerve pain. This is very different. I can feel what seems like the bones (vertibrae) slipping. That is the only way I can describe it. I’m frightened and nervous. Any advise to get me back to the living?

    Hi Sandy,

I have to preface what I’m about to say by first pointing out that I’m not a doctor and can’t diagnose patients or prescribe treatment. I try to limit my “advice” to simply writing books and articles.

What I usually advocate is that people try to rebuild the support structure of their spine first… providing that they check with their doctor and make sure that physical exercise is appropriate for their situation.

In your case, I would have to say that you should probably see your othopedist before you change anything that you’re doing right now.

If the exercises that you’re doing are causing an increase in pain, let your physical therapist know and perhaps s/he can give you some alternatives.

For more info on my personal philosophy on the best way to deal with back pain see my articles listed in the sidebar on the right.
