I thought I would get on here and post for my grandfather before he drops $5240 on this machine. Now I dont know much about back paid or chiro work so i came here. Here is what I know so far:
An MRI shows his L4 has a bulge which is making contact with his actual spinal cord (according the the chiro). This is causing my grandfather to have numbness, burning, pins and needles, and sensitivity in his leg and foot, sometimes both. He has been going to an MD for over a year, and he has just been doing test with electrified needles, and he sent him to a physical therapist which did stretching balancing, and traction.
Now this guys says after lookin at his MRI that his discs are "dehydrated" and this DRX with help by decompressing and actually pulling in moisture (he has to drink a ton of water). And that this DRX is MUCH MUCH different than traction at a physical therapist. He said this thing can sense when the muscles tense up and then does some sort of calculation and senses when they relaxes to continue pulling. Which traction does not.
Now, I come here because my uncle had it done and said it worked for him and no more pain, but I search and see that all this can be done. Then again my grandpa said physical therapy didnt help and all this so I am not really sure where to go. I am just trying to get all the info I can.
Sorry for the long winded post!

Along with the information from this site, which as a newcomer I have found to be quite interesting, I would recommend that you, or anyone thinking of embarking on the costly DRX9000 scam...ooops, I gave it away....read the article by Harriet Hall, MD , from the Skeptical Inquirer September 27, 2007, the link to which I am unable to post here per the rules of this forum.
Note from Admin: Here's the link to the above mentioned article:

Hi:
I hope you don't mind if I comment on the DRX. First, this technology is not new it really is VOX-D spinal decompression. The problem with this form of treatment is that these Doc's generally don't do anything else - where is the rehab, range of motion, muscle balancing, etc. The spine is a complex mechanism and should be treated with respect! Chiro's should work with Physiatrist's and Physical Therapist's. I have seen all modalities fail; however, when you carefully plan the treatment using multiple therapies you get a much better chance of a successful outcome. There is nothing wrong with decompression if you have other therapies involved. I think it would make a lot more sense if the machine could introduce range of motion. I have been looking into a machine called the antalgic-track which looks promising. Oh, by the way, if your Chiro tells you that he target your disc with the DRX he doesn't know what he is talking about - can't be done.

Hope I can share my experience and help someone else out, for a couple of years I have been in severe pain and lost sensation in my left leg, however had great pain in the leg at the same time. I went in to a surgeon seeking non-surgical alternatives and as a last resort another surgery. my last surgery was in 2004 was a failure. I made it thru about 15 treatments, and by that time I was at least 1 year worse! In other words I regressed to almost pre-surgery or rather pre-steroid injection condition. I was having spasms that put me on my knees and I had to crawl to the bathroom. I considered the treatments a complete failure with the worst of consequences. I would caution anyone that if you are considering the disk decompression therapy, make sure you go to a neurosurgeon or at least a back specialist MD!!! Not a chiro, or clinic. Go to physical therapy and have real live "Traction" and if that helps then consider the disk decompression therapy. If the regular traction does not help then pulling even harder is going to help how? I get relief from traction, by getting in the swimming pool and hanging off an inner-tube. But for whatever reason the big bad and expensive machine really hurt me bad. I will not ever do it again! And I know that it is not for me, however they claim to have patients who have recieved great benefits from the use of the machine. I just think that before going to the expense and possible frustration of having your back get worse you should see if the basic concept works for you, maybe a doctor can chime in here and add to this thought. Good luck to all![/quote]Injured back wrote:[quote="Silvy WISH I COULD HEAR FROM MORE PEOPLE WHO HAVE ACTUALLY TRIED IT. :?
I am currently doing treatments on the DRX 9000. I started getting relief in my second week of treatment, using less pain pills and was getting very excited. Well that was the end of that, it seemed that I have regressed. I'm having a terrible time sitting, standing, walking, trying to sleep! It makes me sick to my stomach that I am paying all this money and actually feeling worse. Today will be my 20th and supposed to be my final vist, but they have scheduled me for 3 more days next week. I will verify that today to be sure they don't plan on me paying anymore for those visits.
Hi I am brand new today on this site. As for the DRX9000 machines, after getting all kinds of info in the mail, I went to Advanced spine & Injury Ctr here in San Diego last week, as I have constant low back pain and 2 bouts of sciatica. They put me through the "free" exam with a very fast talking Chiro dr. who told me I needed and MRI at a facility they use and it would cost me $500. Then I should come back and see if I "qualify" for the treatment costing between $4000 an $8,500!! I asked if I could get an MRI from my HMO and he said no that they do not do a "correct" MRI and that this facility did better ones. I thought that was bogus, plus they showed me on a computer how much pain was radiating from my spine by using a padded wand with a gel and moved it down my points and showed on screen how red my irritation levels were. I finally found this site as I want to know if these machines work, as treatment is so expensive - They had a ton of patients, place was very professional and busy! Dr spoke too fast and I didn't get a good feel after they did xrays and told me I was getting a $265 exam for free. What gives???? Is this for real? thanks for any information.Dean wrote:Hi Rita,
Spinal decompression is important and should be part of any rebuilding program. That's why I include exercises that accomplish this in the book.
Traction devices like the DRX-9000 are simply overblown gimmicks designed to get your money. You can do the same thing even better on your own for free, so why spend upwards of $4000?
With the Spinal Decompression clinics you only get roughly 20 sessions of "therapy" for a limited period of time. A couple of weeks. It costs a small fortune and, if you need more than the minimum 20 sessions, they charge you more.
Your body needs and deserves more than that.
If you learn a few simple exercises, you can do it yourself for a lifetime and like I said before, entirely for free.
I have nothing against the DRX-9000.

p.s. Several people have asked, suggested, pleaded, for a hard-copy version of the book. I'm seriously considering that option, but I haven't totally committed to taking that leap yet.
It would probably mean dropping (or modifying) the donation aspect of the site and that raises the question of sales taxes and so on and so forth...
I prefer to keep things simple if I can.

Hello divermom7,
I tried spinal decompression in April of this year. It really did little else other than take $750 worth of my money. They boasted that 90% of their patients get better. I guess I was in the 10%!
When I was there I heard some of the stories people had. One recurring theme was the fact that patients had to keep going back every so often. The long and the short of it is that there is no easy way out. I believe that Dean's book, however, is a way out...it just requires a great deal of work and patience as the injury heals and you rebuild the weakened area.
I originally hurt myself in July 2007. Since then, I've had about 5 or 6 relapses...2 of which left me unable to stand up straight for about 2 or 3 weeks. I started the rebuilding program in May of this year and I have noticed more improvement with these exercises than anything else. The tingling in my right foot is slowly, slowly going away.
If you want to decompress your back, all you need to do is follow the decompression exercises in the book. They help me as I have to sit all day at work.
Anyway, I hope that helps you.

So much to consider...
My story is to long to discuss here or at this time, simply put the doctors still don't know why I have bodily functions from L4-L5 down and how I've stayed alive with the condition of C3 through C7 (C5-C6 and C6-C7 are now held together with 6 screws and a metal plate after walking around for 9 years with no disks there - it was bone on bone-, nothing could be done about the other disks). As time passes it is harder to move my legs or even use the bathroom (gabapentin has helped some), I've learned to tolllerate most of the pain. I have tried everything except lower back surgery: which is not an option because the ruptured disks at L4-L5 and S1 have drained into the nerve canals on both sides and wraped around the nerve roots (the reason for the gabapentin). I am having a hearing tomorrow to convince the judge to authorize DRX9000 treatment at Vestal Physical Therapy with Tod Mansfield. I am looking at the DRX9000 as a possible way to at the least help stablize the other 4 herniated disks in my lower back, but hoping for the extreme of some possible healing or strengthening and realignment of those disks. If the DRX9000 can help stablize my lumbar spine I will be happy, if it also ruduces the pain I will be joyful. These posts give me more to think about and when treatment begins I will be sure to let everyone here know how it is going. The possibility of the DRX9000 helping is worth the risk to me.

DRX 9000
My physical therapist shares office space with a chiropractor who has a DRX 9000. He referred me today as a possible solution to my back problems that I have had for a long time- bulging discs, stenosis and spondeolothesis. I am contemplating possible surgery- a laminectomy.
The Chiropractor wants $3600 up front for 24 sessions with no guarantees of course- otherwise it would be $200 per session or $1200 more if I don't pay up front. He doesn't take insurance or Medicare and said he has to charge this much since the machine vost him $95,000.
I am sure this machine helps some people I just don't know of it woujld help me. I don't think it is a pure scam- but I am sceptical

Not Insured and In Pain (after spinal decompression)
Hello.
I am 24 years old. For the past few years I have had back pain. An x-ray and MRI shows that I have 3 degenerative discs in my L4 and L5 area and a shifted pelvis and minor sculyosis. No one can tell me why I have these problems at such a young age with no accidents or occurance to have caused them. I have no health insurance and cant afford anything outside of my every day to day needs. I researched about all the choices I had and really had only one option: spinal decompression. Surgery is too expensive and not corrective. (cutting away something that my body needs and hoping the problem doesnt return). I know firsthand people who have had back surgery and it has worked, but I cant afford to take the chance, nonetheless. Spinal injection is not something that interested me at all. I have taken way too many pills and all they do is make me sleepy with the pain. Physical therapy really wasnt an option for me because my pain was so severe, I couldnt sit, it hurt to walk, sleep and pretty much move in general. My range of motion was extremely limited.
So, I decided to go with spinal decompression as the success rate was quite high and it was non-invasive. I worked out a payment plan (which I am still paying off) and began my 20 or so treatments. It has been a while since those initial treatments, but I would say approx. 8 out of 10 sessions were horific. I had no problems while I was on the machine (DRX 9000) but as soon as my time was up and I had to get off the table, I couldnt move. My back froze and spasimed so bad, that I would cry out in the absolute worst pain a person can imagine. My chiro would lower the table and try again. Still in so much pain and tears, he would have to try to either stretch out my legs enough to hopefully relieve some tension or turn me on my side, in order to get me off the table. I wish I could relay to you all just how painful getting off this table was for me. I asked him, was this common? to my surprise, no was his answer. lucky me. So, after my initial treatments, since I was having such difficulty, he spread them out to about twice a week and then down to once to sort of ween me from the process. I seemed to do better the longer I went between treatments.
Still, the getting off the machine, for some unknown reason hurts severely for me. Its as if I am learning to walk for the first time when trying to walk after the treatment. However, after I get iced down and have stim done and feel a lot better. I would really like to know what to do? I go back to my chiro every 2 weeks just for stim and adjustments. My back is starting to regress I think. So, I am going back on the spinal decompression machine this Friday. I am so scared, just because its been a few months since I have been on it and hopefully it wont be bad, but my gut tells me it will.
Please understand that before I went to a chiro and even thought about spinal decompression, my back was extremely bad. I am significantly better than I was. I exercise 4-5 times a week and do stretches that help strengthen my lower back as well as my legs and abs.
I just feel it hurting when it shouldnt and I cant do anything even remotely physical without being in pain later. I just feel like there is a bigger issue with my back at hand and cant afford to do anything to find out or fix it. I am stuck. I can only do so much with limited resources and income.
Can anyone offer any advise?

Dean and Others,
I have just downloaded the ebook for back-pain. 53 years old, fit, correct weight, judo instructor (hobby...not business), cycle everyday 11km to work and same back. eat nutritious foods etc etc. onset of lower back pain 5 months ago. then over a couple of weeks back pain disappeared and sciatic pain started. within 1 month it has become debilitating. diagnosed as stenosis L4/5 with 2 bulges L2/3. cycling is almost pain free. slouching is pain free...standing straight and walking straight and even lying straight causes pain. it would seem that the stenosis is therefore responsible (ur comments pls), in the main, for the pain. Right side pain is 3-4 times the level of left side. Have u any suggestions on how to use the book for my condition...anything to avoid..or anything to concentrate on?. many thx for ur contribution...good work...truly...wish me luck. For the record i tried 1 visit with a Chiro...a judo friend of mine...he was dissapointed from his treatment and immediately suggested that he does not think it will help my condition...ditto for another judo friend who is a physiotherapist ..my friends are very honest
....if u can't trust a fellow judoka who can u trust?...my doc is trying to get me in to see a neuro surgeon asap with a cortisone shot as a first suggestion (any comments on that pls?).
anti inflams are usless even at dangerously high doses...on codiene now as a pain blocker...just to get some relief. crawling around the apartment now...1st week off work at the moment...all help appreciated...

Hi ... I was looking into efficacy and purchase options of the DRX900 and just came across your posting. I dont know where you are located, but if you need a Neurosurgeon who is specialized in back (spine), let me know! My brother is a Neurosurgeon and he is not a big fan of shots! Anyways, good luck to you!
