New member has Cobra question.

Postby Peter B » Wed Jun 04, 2008 4:28 pm

Greetings all...this website and the RYB book have given me a new lease on life after being recently diagnosed with a severe L5-S1 herniation. I'm hoping to avoid surgery by following all of the exercises and stretches to the letter. With that in mind, I have a question regarding the initial exercises.

When I do the first Cobra, it feels ok although there's a small amount of pain in my right hip. Moving to the second step is quite painful, and I can feel a sharp pain in my hip if I try to lift too high. Shouldn't the Cobra pose open up the front of the vertebrae and subsequently reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve? I can understand how a forward bend would hurt. Perhaps I'm trying to start exercising too early, as I still have numbness in my right foot down to my big toe.

Thanks for any help you can give me, and thanks again for providing this website!
