Question for Dean about starting the program

Hello,

I have a bulge at L5 S1 due to Degenerative Disc Disease. Based on my MRI, my doc thinks that I may have a tear in the disk which causes a condition known as discogenic pain. This is where the disk is the source of the pain.

Anyway, I don't have terrible pain (2/10). I have numbness and tingling that runs down my right leg and into my foot when I sit or stand for too long. I lie down at work with my laptop on my knees because I know sitting is the worst thing I can do. Walking actually feels fine.

I am doing nonsurgical spinal decompression and I am getting some relief.

The main issue is the constant relapses and then subsequent depression from the relapses. It seems like if I do the slightest "uncontrolled" exercise, I relapse and set myself back.

The latest episode happened when I simply tried to stretch out my back. I tried to pull my knees up to my chest. It felt OK while doing the stretch, but later on I could tell by the severe numbness in my foot, that I had set myself back again. This has happened at least 5 times in the last 5 months or so. It is frustrating.

So my question to Dean is, since I don't seem to be able to stretch my back, will I be able to begin your RYB program without setting myself back? I read on a post that the program starts with the cat stretch...this makes me cautious because hamstring stretches and other stretches seem to set me back.

Note: I did start to feel progress with standard McKensie PT from December to March.

Any advice?

Some people with Sciatica find that they do better if they skip the forward bending exercises in the beginning. I believe krd found this to be true.

Yeah...I think I will do that. I also noticed that my sciatica is bothered after doing the hip shrug. That is somewhat disappointing because it is supposed to aid in the healing of the L5 S1 bulge, but you can't do what you can't do!
