Husband has "bulging discs"

My husband has suffered from lower back paid for about 1.5 yrs now. He HATES doctors. I convinced him to see a specialist and they ordered a MRI and blood test. We saw him today - he said the discs are just bulging - not in any need of treatment. The blood test revealed that there isn't any arthritis. We are checking to see if he has Lyme's disease though.

My question is - should I buy him the "rebuild your back" book? His pain gets bad after raking leaves, shoveling snow, certain lifting, standing for long periods of time, etc. He's not real happy with the doctor saying "It's really nothing."

Also - we have a wterbed - is that contributing to his back pain?

Hi Sandy,

I'm sorta biased about the book, so I will refrain from answering that part of your question other than to say read my article "Blueprint for a Bad Back" and see if that sounds familiar to your husbands symptoms.

As far as the discs are concerned, sounds like you went to an honest doctor. (Most of them are.) Read my article "Abnormalities are Normal" for more on this.

Hi Sandy,

The doctor was giving you good news. Your husband's back pain is nothing more serious than a sprain. Consider yourself lucky, get Dean's book and fix the problem.

Waterbeds are bad for your back. You need a mattress that will give you firm stable back support.

I would highly recommend the book and begin the exercises and get rid of the water bed. Have your husband sleep on something that gives firm (not hard) support for the back. He could try the floor for a while and see if it helps.
