Do I need surgery?

Postby Curt » Wed Jun 29, 2005 3:24 am

Hi everybody,

According to a MRI, I have a "large posterior disk protrusion" at L4-5.

One Neurosurgeon told me yesterday that I definately need surgery. Another Neurosurgen told me today that I don't need surgery and to keep taking meds and do physical therapy. I've been on meds for several weeks now...with no real relief.

What should I do?

Hello Curt,

Welcome to the group. I would go and get another opinion.

Hi Curt,

It's not unusual for two doctors to give two different opinions. The good news is that they did disagree. If both doctors were alarmed and insisted that you must have surgery immediately then, and only then, would I consider surgery.

Dean has a good article here: Herniated Discs Don't Require Surgery
