Why does my sciatica keep coming back?

Postby Katie » Sat Jun 25, 2005 10:36 am

Hi everyone,

Can anybody tell me why my sciatica keeps coming back? I've had it off and on for two years now and I can't seem to shake it. I know it's caused by pinched nerves but I would think that once it goes away it should stay away. I mean if it heals up doesn't that mean that the nerve isn't pinched anymore? I'm confused and frustrated. I don't want to have surgery so I"m looking into alternative therapies like yours. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Katie

Hi Katie,

Welcome to the group.

Pinched nerves take a long time to heal. Even after the pain is gone the nerves can take months to finish healing. The goal is to relieve the pressure and/or inflamation on the nerve so that the healing can begin. Then to take steps to shore up the internal stuctures so that they don't pinch that nerve again. It can be a long process but if it's successful it's worth the effort.

Hope this helps,
Bill

Hi Katie,

Right, Bill. The mistake most people make is thinking that everything is healed just because the pain is gone. That's why you hear people say their sciatica comes and goes. They just do enough to get the pain to stop whether by exercise or medication or just time itself and once that's accompished they assume they're out of the woods. They go back to their old lifestyle and eventually the pain flares up again.

The key is to completely rebuild your back. It's not foolproof. Sometimes the source of the pinched nerve can't be fixed by exercise alone. That's when you have to turn to surgery. The good thing is that proper rehabilitation is proving to be far more successful.

Hi Katie,

I would recommend that you try exercise before you decide to go the surgery route. Many people have had to have multiple surgeries just to try and find the real source of their pinched nerve and many never do find relief. We've had a much higher success rate among our group and the great thing is that exercise doesn't cost a thing.
