New member: question about the cobra

Greetings all. I'm a new member of RYB, and after acquiring Dean's ebook, I now have a new lease on life. Approximately two weeks ago, I ended up in the hospital emergency after losing the feeling in my right foot. A CT scan showed a severe herniation of the L5-S1 disc, with encroachment on the sciatic nerve. I was referred to a surgeon, and I'm awaiting our first appointment.

Having said that, and after sinking into a very severe depression thinking about all the troubles I was having, I discovered this website and it was like a curtain had been lifted. I was particularly buoyed by the information regarding my body's potential to heal without surgery. The way the doc in emergency made it sound, my back was a disaster and surgery would be inevitable.

Ok...enough with the preamble. As of today, I still have a fair amount of pain in my right hip, and my foot is still numb. I feel I am getting slightly better, and thought I'd start off with some of the beginner exercises in the book. The first Cobra step feels ok, but I find Cobra 2 causes quite a bit of pain to flare in my hip. Physiologically, this doesn't make sense from what I've read...doesn't the nerve come out the front of my spine? If so, I would think the Cobra would only serve to open up the space, not compress further on the nerve and cause pain. I can understand how a forward bend would hurt because it would compress the disc more and force the herniation further into the nerve.

Any help would be appreciated. This website is a God send! Thanks so much for helping me break out of my despair.
