I'm new and after some advice

Hi everyone,

I have been having some problems with my back and stumbled across this site to my relief. I had problems with the lower right hand side of my back about 2 months ago, the physio diagnosed a bulging disc and gave me exercises to do to try and fix this. This seemed to work and I was starting to feel better until I started to get pain on the left hand side! I now have lower back pain on the left and sciatic pain all down my left leg which is taking over my life. I am trying so hard to be positive but it is pretty tough, particularly as I really can’t sleep, even on the painkillers. Two physios are now stumped with what is causing the problem and the doctor has referred me to a specialist for a scan.

In the meantime I have downloaded Dean's book as I am determined to sort this. My problem at the moment is that the most uncomfortable position for me is lying flat, when I try to attempt the basic cobra position the pain in my leg is almost unbearable. My question really is should I just fight this and try and stay in this basic position or should I not be doing these exercises while it is so painful?

I am only 27 and quite distressed about this whole thing so if anyone could off me any advice I would be so grateful.

Hi Katie,

You might try the exercises in The Pain Relief Manual. Dean wrote it after writing the back and neck books for people who were having trouble doing even the basic exercises.

I actually think it's his best book of the three, but it is mostly about joint pain. There is a section on chronic pain and some excellent pain relief techniques for sciatica that aren't in the back book.
