Back Brace

Hey Back pain suffers

I wanted to know if any of you have had any success with a back brace. I have not been able to walk upright for 6 weeks, and then today I put on a back brace that I bought last year and the result was amazing for me. I am actually standing almost upright and the pain is almost completely reduced.

The one that I am wearing is neoprene and I bought it from a website. This thing is worth its weight in gold. Google Twinflex and check it out. Word of caution, in the beginning with my sciatica, I could not wear it because it increased the pain. However, it now appears to be so soothing. I am not saying that it will work for everyone, but it sure has helped me. Be posting.

Thanks for the tip. Sounds like the brace may be taking some pressure off the nerve, which in turn will allow it a chance to start healing. That's always the tough part with Sciatica. Getting the nerve to calm down enough that you can start on the physical therapy.

Keep us posted on what you experience with the brace. Good days, bad days, how long you wear it at a time ... that sort of thing. I'm sure a lot of people will be interested in your experience.

Good suggestion, Ken. Got a back brace today ... obviously reduces the load on my lumbar spine and strengthens the nuetral spine position ... VERY good things. I'll post a report after a few weeks on the road.

Dr. McGill offers a caution for those using this brace a lot: be extra careful when NOT wearing the brace. There will be a greater chance for injury if we forget we're not wearing the brace and make some move that can be done safely with the brace, but is too much for the abdominal muscles without that artifical support. Thus, it would seem to me, to be extra special important to exercise the abdominals most days, so they don't atrophy from the use of the brace.

I've fashioned a decompression harness to wear while driving the big truck (on the road IDD therapy, I hope). The basic idea is to reduce the load on the lumbar spine, without compromising the ability to drive safely. I'll let you know how this first experiment works. Considering how very hard sitting for many hours every day is on the lumbar spine, anything that significantly reduces that load is also a VERY good thing.

Glad to read, Ken, that you're going to concentrate on rebuilding your back before taking on St. Andrews. I'm sure you'll enjoy the game much more next year! :D

Walking still sucks

Glad to hear that the back brace is working out well for you. I feel so much more comfortable and the pain level is virtually not there until I try to walk. I can honestly walk for about 5 minutes before my leg starts to bother me. I am doing more agressive stretching now and I am hoping that I will see a change soon in this part of my rehab.

How are you walking now???? I hope that you are doing better at it than I. Oh well, such is life. Be posting.

glad the brace is helping your sciatica to soothe down. I will get one too. In my case after 4 weeks of PT now the only time the nerve gets agitated is if i drive for say an hour or if i do hamstring stretch with my right hamstring otherwise I am OK. As per Dean i should minimize both these activities to let the sciatica or the right sided L5-S1 disc herniation heal.
