Dean's method resembles the NHS approach moreso than the surgery. I had a deep sciatic pain for about 7 months before it more or less got better. I improved a lot with the exercises--so much so that I could get around a little better, as long as I did not sit down very much. I finially made a better improvement with the injection, but I still waited around for MRIs and appointments for six months (and that is in America--half of the waiting was me, half the medical system with future appointments).
I suggest taking to the exercises as you recover from the surgery. You want your back to be flexible, strong, and lubricated/elastic, surgery or no surgery.
