powerlifting

I train mainly for powerlifitng, injured my back over 15 years ago, of late it seems to be reacuring more often, I now get pain going down my leg when i sit for long periods in a car, however if i elevate my buttock it eases!
I have downloaded the rebuild book.

i also focus on a great deal of core wrok and lower back excersises, i keep the abs tight on lifts, only use a belt for maximum lifts ectr.

I've just strained it again, don,t know how, very little pain, just a slight niggle, tried the gym but it felt worse.
how long should i steer clear of weights to let it heal
I tend to return to the gym within a week a two and try to work around it?
is this reason the injury just won't go away?
all my pain is mainly on my lower left side

Hi plod,

The symptoms you're describing can be caused by a pinched or irritated nerve. One thing to keep in mind is that an injured nerve can take as much as six months to fully heal even after all the symptoms disappear.

What often happens is that people start to feel better and think everything is healed... when it's not. They then rush back into activities that can re-injure that nerve and bang... they think they've had a "relapse" when what they really have is unfinished business.

If you think of the RYB exercises as filling a deflated tire, and you only fill the tire until it's just off the rim and then go back to driving your car... You may think everything is okay because the rim appears safe from damage... but one hard bump and that rim is going to hit pavement.

My advice is to concentrate on rebuilding the back until it is truly 100% and not just barely off the rim.

I hope no doctors read my dumb "car guy" logic because I know it's probably a bad example, but I came up with it off the top of my head just now.

Actually, Dean, that's a pretty damn good analogy. I like it.

Plod: I agree that you're going back to powerlifting way too soon. Stick with the RYB exercises for a little longer, and then KEEP DOING THEM even while you're doing your gym thing. They're working different areas differently. RYB is mainly stretching, vs. the brute strength of your lifting. They should work well together for you.

that sounds about right, normally i can go years without a bad injury, often there might be tightness but i still feel ok. But I injured it in a huge way last year, ended up crawling around the floor, couldn't stand up straight i was all twisted one side when i did, since then as soon as the pain allowed me, i was back in the gym trying to strengthen the back!
since then, it has never really healed like it used to, I am 35 so a bit older. but no wiser!
do you think after a period it will be ok to engage in weights not directcly affecting the lower back, no squats, deadlifts good mornings. hypers ectr

Yes, you should eventually be able to work some resistance training in a little at a time. I'm sure you have enough experience to judge what you can get away with. Just listen to what your body is telling you during and after your workouts... and if the symptoms worsen... you'll know you need to back off.

I'd stick with machines if you have them available and try to avoid free weights due to the necessity of loading and unloading the bar.

your story sounds too, too familiar, except in my case me it was heavy work, lifting extension ladders, planking, scaffolding etc. Even the sitting in cars for long periods and elevating the buttock bit is so familiar.

I truly think if you continue on your current path you're setting yourself up for THE big one! I kept injuring my back, let it heal, injure it again, let it heal or so I thought, but all I was doing is 'half inflating the tire' as Dean puts it.

I winced as I read your story because I went that path and ended up flat on my back for 4 months and just starting to come good again with the help of RYB and this site.

Look after yourself man! You know somethings amiss or you wouldn't have been on this site looking for answers. I just wish I found this site before my sciatic explosion. I'm just starting to regain some strength, confidence and self esteem again now after having gone from a robust active and vibrant 44 year old guy into a frail bent-over old man in a matter of months but I'm hell bent on getting back to my NEW self!

That twinge you feel is a sign, take heed of its warning.
