can't sit and have tried everything

Hi. this is my first post and was wondering if anyone has any advice. i'm 29 years old and have a broadbased left sided disc bulge and slight protrusion (l5-s1) at least that's what the mri shows. it has been 12 months since my lower back started bothering me and after trying PT my left leg is now constantly numb. it went numb immediately following a therapist visit where they tried to "manipulate" my SI joint that was "stuck". i have been to 5 different back doctors and have tried everything from PT to chiropractors to acupuncture to epidurals and facet blocks. also have tried steriod packs and NSAIDs and nothing has worked. has anyone gone through this or have any helpful advice to share?

Ugh, I know how frustrating lower back and sciatica problems can be. There were times when I felt completely hopeless and depressed because of my sciatic and back pain. It seemed to last forever and I felt desperate for relief. Eventually though, it healed and now I am feeling better, not in pain, and doing everything I did before.

Disc bulges might take longer to heal than ruptured/herniated discs. The good news, although it's probably hard to believe right now, is that the vast majority of all disc injuries heal naturally over time, on their own.

If you're still having lots of problems and leg numbness with PT, maybe try doing nothing except for the first exercise in Dean's book - the cobra pose - until your symptoms start to improve. Some believe that that exercise can help to push the disc back into place, which is pretty cool.

The tricky part about sciatic nerve irritation is exercising carefully so as not to inflame the nerve more, without becoming totally sedentary.

Good luck. It does get better. This condition doesn't last forever - it just seems like it does when you're in the midst of it.

My advice to you is due to the fact that you haven't had luck with doctors/ chiros/PTs , stay away from them all ! If you read through this book and do the exercises, it make take some time but things will get better. I think that the last advice you got from Cygnet is spot on, its so important to exercise but to do the 'right' exercises, ones that aren't going to make your sciatica symptoms worse and to give the nerve chance to heal. Have you heard of or tried a "kneeling chair"? I know it's not a cure, but it could provide temporary relief. I too have trouble sitting for any length of time (degenerated disks). I have tried one of these chairs and loved it! I am in the process of getting one for myself. You can research them online. Good luck!

Hi I have a herniated disc for 1 year and havent benn able to sit since,
2 months ago I whent to a Shop and I got a cushion, like the one people with hemoroids use, and this has helped sooo much.
Imagine I can sit for longer periods, and when I get up I dont feel sored like before. since it has a hole in the botom it lets de coxis rest, not alowing it to touch the chair, and taking a hole lot of presure of your back.
I hope it works, it is the only thing that helps me, good luck.

A few years ago, I was in the same situation. Nothing helped me until I stumbled across the McKenzie book in the discount bin at the book store. In there they have a form of this site's, Cobra stretch. Like you, I struggled for a long time with no improvement (docs, crazypractors, injections, 6 rounds of PT, etc.). After a few days of doing the stretch, I felt much better than I had at any time in the preceeding 12 months. With that stretch alone, I was able to manage my back for 2+ years without any significant re-occurrences. Since then I have re-injured my back and found this site. The book is very good and I'm excited about the program.
