I injured my back doing squats about a month and a half ago and because of (operational commitments) military I just pushed through the injury. My back is sore and my legs are giving my alot of pain. I have taken all the NSAIDS that I can including Torydol (have little pain with this stuff). I just got my MRI results back and they say
l3-l4 unremarkable
L4-L5 suspiciuos of a disk bulge
l5-s1- There is a dick bulge

Impression susspiouss of disc bulge may combine with a broad base central disc protrusion and induce a spinal canal stentosis between L4-L5.

I am in the mil and I need to get better soon as possible. I have been to Physical Therapy, little improvement, in traction, was sent ot Pain management and was told I coould get an epidural injection. My question is..
Do I need to do these injections?
Can I correct a (bulge disc)?
Is this pain something I am going to live with the rest of my life...?
I am going to get the Rebuild your back book no matter what but I still would like some more hope...

Thanks for any advice...

Hi 8251,

Welcome to the group.

Hold off on the injections. I'm confident the book will tell you everything you need to correct all of your back problems.

From a cup half full perspective, be glad you have a bulging disk at L5-S1. A lot of people don't even have a disk left at L5-S1 and they've been able to fully recover. Read Dean's articles on herniated discs for more info.

No, I don't think you'll have to live with pain the rest of your life. In fact, I'd be really surprised if you did.

Thanks for the reply and the optimism. I really got down on myself when I found out I can't fly anymore while I am in pain...I need to get better and fast to get back in the air...I will take your advice. I have already started the exercises and felt remarkably better after doing the decompression exercises... I don't have a problem doing most of the exercises its just hard to do when I am at work. Any problem with doubling up on the exercises that I can't do when I get home? Well thanks for listening..take care.

Hi 8251 -- I think Bill's right on....hold off on the injections. I don't know anyone who's had any permanent relief from them.

As to increasing the exercises when you're home, that would depend on how often you're home and how long you're on duty where you can't do anything. I would guess that increasing the exercises when you have more time wouldn't be a problem IF you don't overdo. (In this instance, pain is NOT gain!) Instead of doing two sets of exercises in a sitting, for example, split them so you do them 12 hours apart. Muscles need time to recover, and too much work too close together creates extra pain and stress which, it should go without saying, is counter-productive.

If you haven't already, check out Dean's Pain Relief Manual . He offers some exercises you can incorporate at work. They only take a few minutes and are something you can do almost anywhere.
