soccer and herniated disc

Post by jennifer » Tue Aug 16, 2005 4:42 pm

My name is jennifer and im 23. I have finally got diagnosed with a L5, S1 herniation after two years of back pain. I had siatica but i have recently started strength training and running, and it has gone away somewhat. i play soccer at college but am nervous this year because it hasnt got any better plus i am a goal keeper which throws my body around alot. Doctors have been very confusing to me and i just dont know what to do? can anyone relate? should i not play in fear of rupturing it more? would a cortisone shot help? am i being knieve of the situation by playing?
thanks for listening to my concerns and look forward to your feed back.

Hi Jenny,

My general advice would be not to play until after you've completely rebuilt your back. I know that's easier said then done when a team is depending on you to play. However, it's never a good idea to continually aggravate an injury. Better to fully recover and then come back at 100 percent than to risk causing permanent damage.

I don't recommend the cortisone shot. They usually aren't necessary.

hi jeniffer. i can totally relate to your situation. from youth, i was also a goalkeeper for my school and club. i was always overweight, maybe this contributed to the back pains i have now at 22 years old. i would recomend you take as long as it takes to restore your back to full fitness. i decided to continue playing and found myself in more difficulties. dont let it happen to you. good luck jeniffer!
