Please tell me it wil get better

Hi anyone who is out there. I got on to the rebuild your back programme about 4 months ago when my back "went out" again. That time I ended up with the whole pain down the right leg thing as well as numbness etc. Anyway could not move at all for 4 days. Crawled to the bathroom. Anyway eventually it came right and I eagerly started on the rebuild you back programme as my back going out episodes have increased dramatically over last couple of years. First started over 10 years ago, and I'm just 35 now.

Anywas was at the beach 4 days ago and it went out with no warning. Muscles constricted too and my hip is sticking out to the side. What is concerning me is it doesn't seem to be improving and I am doing the cobra exercises. It's still "catching" and sends me into orbit with pain, then I have to try really hard to deep breathe and relax so the whole thing doesn't start spasming. The "catching" tells me the disk is still stuck out. Basically ct showed disc L3 TO S1 herniated or whatever u want to call it. Can anyone give me anymore tips or encourage me, cos I need it right now. Hailing from Australia

Hi Josie,

The body takes time to heal. Usually far more time than we would like. Reread my articles on herniated discs and pinched nerves for more on this.

The bottom line is the disc is probably going to take in the neighborhood of 6 months to fully retract and the pinched nerve is going to take 6 months to heal once you get the disc (or whatever is irritating it) off of it. And that is if you are doing everything right and don't re-injure it in the mean time. (Which you may have done.)

So you could easily be looking at a year or more before you will be back to normal.

There are no shortcuts or miracle cures despite the false claims of 3-day cures and 21-day cures, you see elsewhere. The people making those claims are liars and it's a shame people like that exist in the world. (But I digress...)

My opinion is that the rebuilding route is still the best approach for most people. The only real alternative is surgery and that only removes (amputates) the part of the disc that is sticking out. The disc and nerves will still require the same amount of time to heal after the surgery.

Read Randolph's posts. He went through exactly what you're going through right now. It took him about a year to fully recover.

Hang in there. It will get better. It's just going to take time.

Hi Dean,

Thank you so much for replying to my post. I read Randolfs posts and actually realise how fortunate I am not to have a whole lot more pain. Every episode I have had over the last couple of years the worse pain that leaves me incapacitated only last a few days and then as the muscles relax etc I generally end up pain free within a couple of weeks. I can see from reading others posts the potential for it to get so much worse and therefore am so glad I found RYB programme now.

Like I said I started on the programme about 4 months ago after the worse episode I have ever had which resulted in the leg pain and numbness. And think I was well on the mend until I just reinjured it again last week. But in all fairness I had not been as diligent in my exercises in the couple of weeks before this episode and just returned from holiday to a whole week of sitting in the office. Not a good combination. Anyway I turned the corner on Thursday and the "catching" pain has gone. I am still lopsided and being very careful as my back feels very fragile. I hope I have learned my lesson and will not be slack regarding the exercises again. Thank you again. I hope to be a regular on this forum as it makes a huge difference to know others are going through the same thing and helps me to keep my own pain in perspective.
