I would highly recommend the book and begin the exercises and get rid of the water bed. Have your husband sleep on something that gives firm (not hard) support for the back. He could try the floor for a while and see if it helps.

We ended up with a 2" thick viscous foam (tempur-pedic) pad for the bed. The thickness provided alot of support for the back and also we tended to stop as much tossing and turning at night. We got ours through a foam distributor in town.

We've had a Sealy for the past five years. In my last bout with the bulging disc, my wife bought a 2" piece of viscous foam for a mattress topper. It does help with support for the back and is a cheaper alternative to the Temperpedic mattress.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I started doing the "cobra" and other exercises on Tuesday, 8/23. Although it's still rough in the mornings getting up, I am now off of the ibuprofen and the "pins and needles" in my leg has subsided.
